End of Summer :(

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I know it makes everyone sad, including this blogger,  that summer has come and passed.  But with the end of one adventure begins a new one. While the construction is not a new adventure there has been certainly some positive changes happening around the SMC.

Coming into campus you have probably noticed the newly paved road and newly poured cement sidewalk in front of the SMC. It turned out really nice and we are very pleased with the look and results of it. It should help with traffic flow during the first few weeks of the semester and over time will help divert traffic around the newly built SMC.

Inside the SMC work has continued as usual and some good progress has been made. Windows are being installed into the new Fitness Center and the clock tower is taking shape. If you walk along Shenks lane you will notice two long holes cut into the side of the building. The holes began somewhere during the middle of July and eventually will house Windows which will provide a glimpse into the new food court and Club De’Ville.

As always you can see the updated pictures of the construction. Be sure to check them out!

Mid-Summer Construction update!

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am back again with some Mid-Summer construction updates! While most of the interior has not changed much we have had some major changes to the exterior of the old SMC and interior areas of the new SMC.

Exterior wise there are now  giant holes cut into the side of the old SMC that faces Shenks Lane. Yes, that’s correct…GIANT HOLES. Glass windows are going to be housed in these holes and will give the SMC some nice natural lighting in areas that would otherwise be dim. In the front of the building, side facing George Street, road construction has begun along with construction for the new ATM area. The road construction is focused on widening George Street in front of the SMC and allowing for smoother traffic flow.

The interior hasn’t changed much in the old SMC. Workers are diligently hanging HVAC items and still doing some demolition. The big interior changes have occurred in the new SMC areas, such as the new fitness center, and new student organizational office buildings. Interior walls have been framed, exterior walls for the fitness center are almost done, and fire proof painting is moving along quickly! Pretty exciting to see how far it has come considering just 6 months ago it was  just a concrete pad.

That’s all the updates for now! Be sure to check out the updated pictures on our facebook page!

Work continues on Phase I of the project. The concrete slab will be poured this week in the new Fitness Center, Office Suites, and Atrium. All of the under-slab utilities have been placed in this area. The final pieces of steel that will make up the running track are also being completed this week.

Late last week, the final piece of steel was placed on the clock tower. Students, Faculty, and Staff had the opportunity to sign this piece before it was hoisted into place.

Snow, snow, and more snow!

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The weather continues to affect the progress of the renovation. Snow removal will be the first order of business this week as steelworkers continue with the detailing and decking of the addition on the east side of the building. Concrete will be poured in the new mechanical room on the lower level and the crane will be moving to the south end of the building to place the columns and running track for the new Open Rec Area. Check out the pictures to see the near two feet of snow blanketing the construction area.
