I know it makes everyone sad, including this blogger, that summer has come and passed. But with the end of one adventure begins a new one. While the construction is not a new adventure there has been certainly some positive changes happening around the SMC.
Coming into campus you have probably noticed the newly paved road and newly poured cement sidewalk in front of the SMC. It turned out really nice and we are very pleased with the look and results of it. It should help with traffic flow during the first few weeks of the semester and over time will help divert traffic around the newly built SMC.
Inside the SMC work has continued as usual and some good progress has been made. Windows are being installed into the new Fitness Center and the clock tower is taking shape. If you walk along Shenks lane you will notice two long holes cut into the side of the building. The holes began somewhere during the middle of July and eventually will house Windows which will provide a glimpse into the new food court and Club De’Ville.
As always you can see the updated pictures of the construction. Be sure to check them out!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am back again with some Mid-Summer construction updates! While most of the interior has not changed much we have had some major changes to the exterior of the old SMC and interior areas of the new SMC.
Exterior wise there are now giant holes cut into the side of the old SMC that faces Shenks Lane. Yes, that’s correct…GIANT HOLES. Glass windows are going to be housed in these holes and will give the SMC some nice natural lighting in areas that would otherwise be dim. In the front of the building, side facing George Street, road construction has begun along with construction for the new ATM area. The road construction is focused on widening George Street in front of the SMC and allowing for smoother traffic flow.
The interior hasn’t changed much in the old SMC. Workers are diligently hanging HVAC items and still doing some demolition. The big interior changes have occurred in the new SMC areas, such as the new fitness center, and new student organizational office buildings. Interior walls have been framed, exterior walls for the fitness center are almost done, and fire proof painting is moving along quickly! Pretty exciting to see how far it has come considering just 6 months ago it was just a concrete pad.
That’s all the updates for now! Be sure to check out the updated pictures on our facebook page!

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! Back again for some SMC construction/destruction updates!
Almost a month into summer vacation and many new construction changes have been taking place at the SMC! More rooms have been demolished (got some pretty cool pics of this), Walls have been framed, the new fitness area is coming together and while walking through the work area today I came across a Bobcat construction vehicle driving around the halls! Kinda wish they let me drive it, looked like a blast!
It’s hard to imagine that this only started a year ago and we are already this far. What used to be the Galley is completely gutted, along with the Student Programs wing, computer lab, and various other meeting rooms throughout the SMC. The newly built areas are coming together nicely, and you can begin to distinguish rooms.

Immediately following the end of the Spring 2010 semester work has begun on the inside of the SMC!
In this construction phase most of the interior is getting demolished and renovated. Rooms have been gutted, walls have been knocked down, duct work is being removed and many areas have become unrecognizable. Check out the photos for a complete tour of the destruction!
Of course, destruction of the SMC is not the only step in this process. The recently constructed areas have been progressing very nicely and the new fitness center is finally taking shape! The basketball court sub-floor and the upper indoor running track have been poured and the walls around the fitness center are taking shape. It is pretty amazing how the work progresses week by week. Pictures are posted detailing the newly constructed areas.

Work continues on Phase I of the project. The concrete slab will be poured this week in the new Fitness Center, Office Suites, and Atrium. All of the under-slab utilities have been placed in this area. The final pieces of steel that will make up the running track are also being completed this week.
Late last week, the final piece of steel was placed on the clock tower. Students, Faculty, and Staff had the opportunity to sign this piece before it was hoisted into place.
Check out our photo gallery for more picture of the progress!

The weather continues to affect the progress of the renovation. Snow removal will be the first order of business this week as steelworkers continue with the detailing and decking of the addition on the east side of the building. Concrete will be poured in the new mechanical room on the lower level and the crane will be moving to the south end of the building to place the columns and running track for the new Open Rec Area. Check out the pictures to see the near two feet of snow blanketing the construction area.

Welcome back to MU for the Spring 2010 semester. The site has changed significantly since you left for the winter break. Crews have begun to install steel for the addition and the new facility is beginning to take shape. The steel framework you see today is the shell for the new fitness center. This area will be the new home for our cardiovascular and weight training equipment.
You will also notice that the new Open Recreation Area is beginning to take shape. Crews are nearly half done pouring the walls at the south end of the building. Check out our gallery for up to date images!

The mechanical room at the south end of the building is nearing completion as the walls are being placed this week. In addition, the elevator pit has been dug outside the old RMPR entrance. You may have noticed that the site has been brought up to grade in front of the building. Construction crews are now digging the trenches for the footings of the new student organizational/student programs addition. The steel delivery has been pushed back to December 8. Happy Thanksgiving!
