Mid Summer Update

July 7th, 2011

Hey all,

Back with a mid-Summer update. Whew! Where did the Summer go?! It’s already July!

Nothing too exciting other than the NEW BOOKSTORE AND UNIVERSITY STORE!!! Well I guess it’s technically not new however, it has gone through a major facelift and looks brand new. The Bookstore and University Store are currently in the process of moving back and should be operational by next week, July 11th.

Referencing some of the pictures I uploaded today, you can clearly see the progress which was made on the ground floor of the SMC. The ground floor entrance way is coming along nicely and the main hallway is mostly complete. HVAC, ceiling, flooring, painting, and carpeting is ongoing in this area and is nearing completion.

Be sure to check back shortly for some more updates and pictures!

Summer 2011 Update

May 9th, 2011
Hello everybody!
It has been awhile since I have done an update, but I got some good information straight from the top.
On the lower level of the SMC the construction process is ongoing. In the Club De’Ville, Commuter Lounge and Snapper area Drywall is being hung and painted, and the ceiling is being installed with lighting fixtures following that installation. The old Fitness Center area is continuing its transformation into intramural offices and group fitness areas.
Demolition has begun at the North end of the SMC in the Bookstore, University Store, Copy Shop and Radio Station areas. Demolition in the SMC MPR  is slated to begin either by Tuesday or Wednesday of the May 9th week. It is important to note that the Bookstore, University Store and Copy Shop have been relocated to the SMC 118 Meeting Room. Also, as interesting as it may be, it is important to keep away from the demolition process as there is an increased safety concern during this time.
I will have some pictures this afternoon! Keep checking back in for more updates.

Spring 2011 Construction Updates

March 23rd, 2011

Hey all,

Here to give you an update on the continuing SMC construction. The upstairs of the SMC is mostly open for business, with the exception of a few areas, but the downstairs is still an ongoing process.

The old Fitness Center is currently being turned into Intramural offices and group fitness rooms. The Club De’Ville is getting a major face-lift and there will now be a main entrance for the back of the SMC (the side facing Shenks Lane). There are also meeting rooms which are being constructed downstairs as well.

When the downstairs phase is complete there will be more space for you to utilize weather it be by reserving a meeting room or hanging out in the Club De’Ville.

Pictures of this process have been posted. Be sure to check to them out!

SMC Move!

March 9th, 2011

Hi all,

So the date has finally come! Certain areas of new SMC will be opened after Spring Break concludes. These areas are the Fitness Center, the Info-Desk, Student Affairs, Banking Center, Ticket Sales and possibly the Galley.

Stay tuned for more updates and pictures of the move!

Last Week of Break!

January 11th, 2011

Hello everybody, break sure went fast! Hard to believe it’s already over and a new semester is going to begin next week.

I got some new updates for the SMC from our fellow contractors. Along with these updates I took some Evening pictures of the building exterior, not great quality but you can defiantly get a good sense of what the building is going to look like at night, and daytime exterior pictures from the top of Gordinier.  Check these pictures out under the album heading ” Evening Photography ” and ” Last Week of Break “.

Updated pictures of the interior clearly show work progress on the Fitness Center and Student Organizational Space. In the Fitness Center you can see the rubber floor progressing, it is about 35% completed and is scheduled to be completed by Monday or Tuesday of next week. The track floor is being poured in the next few days and the lanes will be painted next week.

The photos of the Student Organizational Space and Information Desk Areas show that it is nearing completion. Office furniture is being assembled and put in the correct locations and detailed cleaning is being done to get the areas up and running.

Throughout the rest of the building miscellaneous areas are still being worked on. These areas include the Galley, Banking Center, Student Affairs Wing, and ceiling areas. The Galley is receiving final pieces of drywall with paint and acoustic griding to follow.  The Banking Center counter tops were being installed on the 10th of January with more work continuing in that area. Throughout all of these area Ceiling and duct work are continuing and should be completed by next week.

Thats it for now! Be sure to check back again soon for some more updates!

2011 is upon us!

January 4th, 2011

Hello Everyone,  back with a fresh new blog entry to start 2011 right! Since I last blogged there have been some advancements made in the building.

Throughout the building ceramic tiling and painting projects are still ongoing. However, the bathrooms are complete and are looking nice! Safety features, such as fire alarms, are being checked and tested. It is obviously important that the safety features are working correctly so the testing is meticulous. Rooftop HVAC units have been connected and heating is being tested throughout certain areas.

In the Fitness Center the Gym floor is complete, while the track floor has been started and is set to be complete by 1/10/11. The main Fitness Center floor is going to be started today, the 4th, and is set to be complete by 1/10/11 as well. After these two projects are complete the Fitness Center construction should be finished.

As always be sure to check out the photos to see what has been discussed in the Blog. The most recent album is titled “2011 is upon us!”

Finish line is in sight!

December 20th, 2010

Burrr! I just got back from taking some pictures and checking out the progress and boy is it cold outside! However, it was definitely worth it as parts of the new building are really, really looking nice.

In the new photos you will see some updated work on the tiling throughout the new fitness area as well as the info desk area. Carpeting has begun behind the info desk as well as throughout the  Student Organizational wing. The new Starbucks area and Galley kitchen seem to have the tiling complete and work in these areas has shifted towards other details such as cabinets, walk in coolers, and other food service amenities.

One of the main developments is the continuation of the downstairs construction. Most of the construction has been centered around the new addition and upstairs trying to get it ready for the start of the Spring Semester. However,  Now that the new addition is taking shape and coming together the construction focus has shifted a bit. They have begun framing out the hallway near the Fitness Center entrance and making progress on a few meeting rooms and areas downstairs as well. I will keep a close on this progress and keep you updated as soon as new developments arise!

As always be sure to check out the photos section to see a detailed looked of the progress!

Getting closer…..

December 13th, 2010

Hey guys and girls, it’s getting closer to the grand opening of sections of the new SMC! I think everyone has been waiting patiently for this day to come, and the wait is going to be well worth it.

The updated pictures show parts of the new building coming together very nicely. You can see the main entrance, info-desk, student programs, student organizations,  Starbucks, galley, galley kitchen, weight/cardio room, and new basketball courts taking shape. The exterior of the building is looking really nice with the hard-scape just about complete in front of the new entrance and along the exterior.

The inside of the building is getting a lot of finishing touches put together. The installation of new doors, ceiling tiles, carpeting, tiling, railings and windows is what the main construction focus is right now and it is a good indication of how close the building is to becoming fully operational.

Check out the updated pictures to see this progress first hand!

Semester Construction Update

November 10th, 2010

Hey all,

Courtesy of an update Gilbane Construction Company I am able provide some details about the construction progress. As you can probably tell the outside has progressed nicely however, many unseen changes in the inside have been taking shape as well.

The fitness Center Area is seeing some good progress as the outside curtain wall and glass are being installed and can be easily visible if walking along Shenks Lane. Inside the drywall is being painted and ceramic tile is being installed within the restrooms ( this looks really cool) next week the toilet fixtures and partitions are scheduled to be installed.

The new atrium area lobby and student org. offices are also seeing some painting and ceiling tiles being hung as well. This includes light fixtures, sprinkler heads and ceiling tiles.

The new kitchen is getting tiled and HVAC is still continuing to be hung throughout the new Galley area. Outside the Galley, where the huge holes were cut into the side of the building, metal panels will start to be hung. This will cover a lot of the yellow dense glass that you will see on the outside.

Be sure to check out the photo link for some updated pictures!
