FAQ

Why are we renovating? In 2004, Millersville University invited consultants to campus to review our student union building and offer suggestions to improve our building.  During that study, the consultants recommended that MU consider renovating the facility.  Their findings showed that the University Community had outgrown the facility, particularly the Fitness Center.  The consultants also discovered that the student body desired a homier atmosphere and a technologically advanced building.  The design of the facility will promote more social interaction and a more efficient layout.  In 2007, the student body passed a referendum to authorize the renovation of the facility.

What is the projected end date of the construction? Fall 2011.

What has been done to make the project green? While there are no plans to apply for LEED Certification, we are implementing green building practices such as efficient lighting, heating/cooling, water usage, and other green building products.  Check back for a list of these efforts.

What are some important future renovation dates? On September 14, phase two of the project will begin on the East and South end of the building.

How do I stay updated? You can continue to visit this website and read the renovation blog or subscribe to our Facebook group and RSS feeds.

What is the cost of the project? Approximately $30 million.

Who is contracted to perform the renovation? Gilbane, Inc. is the construction manager. We will have a foundation and structural steel contractor and all remaining contracts will be going out for bids.

Will the SMC be closed? Phase 3 of the construction will close the majority of the SMC.  The University Store and the newly completed Fitness Center will remain open (with intermittent shutdowns).  Most of the offices and services you have come to rely on will be relocated to other areas on campus.  Check this website at that time for a directory.

What new features should we expect? Exciting changes are coming.  There will be a vastly improved Fitness Center with more equipment, aerobic/dance rooms, more open recreation space and a climbing wall!  The Galley will be enhanced to include more choices and a more efficient layout.  The technology in the building will be state of the art with over 80 wireless access points and a larger computer lab.  Meeting space will also be cutting edge with improved technology and room layouts.  The Club de Ville will now function as a commuter lounge during the day and an event space in the evenings.  The facility will truly be the “Living room of the Campus” with many lounges and study areas.
